Cementitious waterproofing and bathrooms have a strong connection; both function together to create a durable moisture-resistant barrier. According to research, waterproofing accounts for 1% of the total building’s cost, an estimate that favors every homeowner or businessman. In another study, 23% of new buildings had fault-prone waterproofing.
Water is a destructive element that negatively affects the structure’s integrity and reduces its useful life. The flow of water is multi-directional; it takes its own path through capillary action, and lateral or downward movement, causing concrete cancer, roof damage, stains, and more.
Cementitious waterproofing is mostly applied in wet areas, such as restrooms and showers. It is one of the easiest methods of waterproofing concrete, tiles, and other surfaces. Various chemicals, such as water-repellant and additives are used to make the final slurry. The additives are marketed in two forms:
- Liquid State
- Powder State

- 1K System
Also known as one-component waterproofing, 1K waterproofing systems uses a mix of dispersible powder, hydraulic binder, sand, aggregates, and various additives. Prior to application, water is added to the mixture and blended. Afterwards, it is applied on surfaces, especially in wet-prone areas like washrooms.
This mixture can be troweled, brushed, or sprayed. Some formulations are resistant to negative-side pressure; 1K cementitious waterproofing is optimal for interior waterproofing.
- 2K System
In this system, there are two premixed components: powder and liquid. The former component system consists of sand, cement, and additives, such as thickeners and hydrophobic agents. The latter component comprises polymer dispersion with cement compatibility. Like 1K systems, this method is also applied with brush, trowel, or spray.
2K systems offer ‘tenacious adhesion’, a term used for rubber-like membranes that adhere to different surfaces. This type of adhesion occurs with synthetic emulsion polymers (organic compounds added for more flexibility). The elastic nature prevents shrinkage and enhances crevice-bridging.
2K membranes are breathable. Moreover, they are VOC and APEO-free. These systems are ideal for swimming pools, washrooms, kitchens, terraces, balconies, and other similar areas. For industrial setups, it is applied on flat roofs, underground tunneling, storage tanks, and utility pipes.

How to Apply Cementitious Waterproofing in Washrooms?
Cementitious waterproofing systems are strong, durable, and versatile. These membranes are capable of securing surfaces prone to wetness. Let’s discuss the waterproofing process:
- Clean the floor’s surface with soap and water. You can also use chemical solvents. Ensure that the particulates (dust and other particles) are removed.
- Over the surface, pour the screed (1:3 ratio) with a waterproofing agent. The thickness of the screed should be 20mm.
- Brickbat layers, with a thickness of 115-116mm, can be used to avoid joint continuity. The bedding thickness should be 10mm.
- The sloped layer is used to direct water towards the drain. Let it cure for 3 days before applying the next layer.
- The final layer is prepared with a concrete layer (40mm thickness) with a ratio of 1:2:4. The size of the mix ranges between 3-6mm.
- Let the final layer cure for 15-20 days.
N.B. These figures can vary because of different reasons: Surface type, mix quality, area dimensions, etc.)
